NCI Designation

The Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first and only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in North Texas. It is one of 72 NCI-designated cancer centers and one of 57 comprehensive centers. Such comprehensive designation identifies the Simmons Cancer Center as having the characteristics that enable excellence in basic, clinical, prevention, cancer control and population science research as well as community outreach and education and training programs.

The future of cancer care is the ability to make discoveries that can quickly impact patient care and cancer prevention. The Simmons Cancer Center has a discovery engine that exists in very few places. At UT Southwestern Medical Center, 290 faculty members of the Simmons Cancer Center, from 36 different departments, provide over a dozen major cancer care programs that advance the treatment and prevention of cancer through innovative basic science and translational research, leading-edge clinical trials and the latest advances in biomedical technology.
