The Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center was established in 1989 through a generous gift from Dallas philanthropist Harold C. Simmons. The formidable scientific strengths and collegial environment of UT Southwestern provide a solid foundation for important and innovative discoveries relating to cancer.  Our programs in basic, translational and clinical cancer research all seek to explore the fundamentals of cancer biology and in so doing, develop and apply the latest in cancer therapeutics.

We also seek to understand the etiology of cancer in populations and determine who is most at risk for developing cancer, and then develop strategies for prevention and intervention before cancer develops.

Our team of physicians, researchers and their support staff are devoted to our patients' health and well-being through the blending of leading edge cancer research with the best of conventional cancer care. We strive to be at the forefront of patient care by providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that are specific to each patient's need.

Our Mission and Vision underlay our commitment to engaging in leading edge research and delivering high-quality patient care.  The Cancer Center’s Leadership Team would like to welcome you to this website and hope that you will find it useful and informative.

Dr. Rolf Brekken
Dr. Rolf Brekken
Dr. Rolf Brekken, assistant professor of surgery and pharmacology, along with a team of researchers have found that an inexpensive tracing agent, or ‘microbubbles’, can pinpoint how effectively new drugs targeting pancreatic cancer work. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers because it is not easily detected, and so is typically only found in later stages of progression.
