Research and Research Training are an important activity of the Transplantation Immunology Division of the Department of Internal Medicine of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, TX. Research Training Post-Doctoral Fellowships are available from time to time, for qualified applicants who have completed graduate studies and wish to pursue a career in Immunology and Histocompatibility. Graduate students actively engaged in the Graduate Immunology Program may also be accepted for rotation in this laboratory. Candidates for Graduate studies should apply to the Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Applicants for Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Immunology and Histocompatibility should send a detailed Curriculum Vitae to our office, using the contact information given below.

The research interests in our group center around the general topics of the role of the genes of the Human Major Histocompatibility Complex (HLA), the polymorphisms and genetics of HLA antigens and the mechanisms of transplant rejection, graft-versus-host disease and other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases associated with HLA antigens.

Topics of recent publications from our group:

  • Studies of the Human Major Histocompatbility Complex class I-chain related MIC genes, including the possibility that they may be targets in transplant rejection and the forces driving their polymorphism;
  • Development of new strategies for high resolution typing of HLA alleles using Multiplexed Single Nucleotide Extension (MSNE) and flow cytometry with polystyrene beads;
  • Analysis of the distribution of the HLA alleles in different populations, such as tribes of South Amercian Indians, Chinese, and residents of Northern India;
  • Investigation of the role of HLA antigens in determining susceptibility for development of various diseases such as Endemic Pemphigus Foliaceus, Type I Diabetes Mellitus, Psoriasis, Leprosy and Juvenile Arthritis.

Our division participates in the International Histocompatibility Workshops and collaborates with many investigators both locally and worldwide. Our members attend and present their work at the national meeting of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), the American Transplantation Society, the American Association of Immunologists and international conferences devoted to immunology and transplantation.
