Eyes (Ophthalmology)

UT Southwestern Medical Center is home to one of the premier centers in the world for the study of ophthalmology and treatment of patients. The Department of Ophthalmology’s faculty of clinicians and scientists employ pioneering research to deliver expert medical and surgical care to patients.

The Department of Ophthalmology has a longstanding history of success in this field; ophthalmologist Dr. Edward Cary was one of the founding fathers of Southwestern Medical College. Today we treat more than 50,000 patients per year at our outpatient clinical practices. Our physicians are recognized internationally for their contributions to the field of ophthalmology.

UT Southwestern’s eye specialists are dedicated to improving treatment of eye disease and preventing blindness. They also serve patients whose vision is threatened by other diseases that affect the eyes or who have eye injuries.

UT Southwestern is considered a leader in the field of ophthalmology because:

  • Our ophthalmologists are experts in the expanding field of refractive surgery, such as LASIK and surgically implanted lens procedures.

  • We offer consultative services in every medical and surgical area of ophthalmic care.

  • We train eye care physicians, as well as graduate students and clinical and research postdoctoral fellows.

  • We conduct vital research for the prevention and treatment of eye disease and blindness.

  • We train ophthalmic assistants and technicians in preparation for accreditation testing and certification.
