Contact dermatitis is an inflammation triggered by a substance that comes in contact with the skin. During an allergic response, the immune system fights the substance by producing antibodies. The antibodies rush to the exposed area and cause symptoms such as swelling, rash, itching and blistering. Triggers can be anything from poison ivy to synthetic fibers in clothing.
Other substances cause a toxic effect. Common culprits are chemicals, medications and certain plants.
Eczema is a skin condition closely associated with allergic reactions that can run in families.
