The Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology is uniquely positioned within a world-class medical center. This provides access to a wealth of research and clinical training opportunities. The Program, designed as a four-year training experience, has been accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1986 and includes a captive clinical internship, also approved by the APA. Graduate work leading to the Ph.D. degree is offered by a faculty drawn from components of UT Southwestern Medical Center, with additional support from local universities, agencies, and area psychologists. Members of the core psychology faculty are predominantly from the Division of Psychology, within the Department of Psychiatry at the Medical School.
Our basic training philosophy reflects a clinician-researcher model. We believe that this model prepares students for professional and research activities in the broadest possible range of settings. Specific objectives of the program include:
- exposure to a wide variety of supervised and broadly conceived clinical and consulting experiences
- development of a firm understanding of research principles and methodology including skill in formulating, designing, and implementing psychological and outcome research
- acquisition of competence and confidence in the role of psychologists in medical and other multidisciplinary settings
- training highly competent clinician-researchers who are able to establish successful careers in academic, hospital, organizational, research, and/or practice-oriented settings.
