The Head and Neck Pathology Laboratory at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a leading center for the study of tumors of the head and neck, including tumors of the salivary glands, upper respiratory tract, and thyroid gland. We consult with other pathologists and physicians around the country seeking expert diagnosis and second opinions on these cancers. We also take part in several national clinical trials investigating the use of molecular screening to detect head and neck cancers.

The Head and Neck Pathology Laboratory is led by Dr. Justin Bishop, who is the laboratory’s primary consultant. We provide expert consultation for neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, salivary glands, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, maxillofacial region, and other head and neck sites. To aid in the diagnosis and classification of head and neck tumors, we can perform an extensive panel of immunohistochemical stains, RNA in-situ hybridization for various Human Papillomavirus types and Epstein Barr Virus, and a wide range of fluorescence in-situ hybridization studies. Studies can be done on tissue or on blocks of slides prepared elsewhere. We will fax a written report within three days after we receive your slides and surgical pathology report.
