Education & Training in General Internal Medicine

Mission

To educate, train, and develop the next generation of internal medicine physicians to prevent disease when possible, manage chronic conditions and palliate when necessary, and support patients and families always wherever their journeys may lead by prioritizing a culture of collaborative, evidence-based practice and role modeling emotional well-being.

Goals

  • Enhance teaching skills and resources for faculty, including those related to learner evaluation, professional development, and mentorship
  • Support faculty in developing scholarly projects and programs
  • Promote leadership in undergraduate and graduate medical education among faculty
  • Train future generations of academic internists through fellowship programs
  • Increase interest in academic internist careers among internal medicine trainees

Programs

Medical Student Programs

Multiple GIM faculty are leaders and core educators for medical student trainees. For example:

  • Dr. Blake Barker serves as Associate Dean of Students Affairs at Southwestern
  • Dr. Reeni Abraham serves as the Associate Vice Chair for Undergraduate Medical Education in the Department of Internal Medicine
  • Dr. Stephanie Brinker serves as the Co-Director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship
  • Dr. Jessica Campbell serves as the Co-Director of the Ambulatory Clerkship

Multiple GIM faculty also serve as mentors in the Academic Colleges in the medical school.

Resident Programs

Multiple GIM faculty are leaders and core educators for internal medicine residents. For example:

Clinics and hospitals staffed by GIM faculty at UT Southwestern, Parkland Health and Hospital System, and the VA North Texas Health Care System serve as key educational sites for internal medicine residents.

Fellowship Programs

The Division runs two fellowship programs designed to train future generations of academic internists.
